What is a fireproof cable?

Very often in the modern world, the cause of a fire is poor-quality wiring, or an incorrectly selected cable for operation. If the network is overloaded, or if certain electrical appliances are used for other purposes, a fire source may occur. Therefore, often when installing a cable, first of all, the owner has to think about safety precautions, and the question of a fire-resistant cable, “non-combustible cable”, “smokeless cable”, etc. arises. What is it and what is the difference we will understand in this article.

A flame retardant cable is a cable that continues to function for a specified period of time under open fire conditions. The concept of fire resistance is enshrined in state standards.

By itself, the definition of a non-combustible cable is not correct, since it is very often used, meaning a fire-resistant cable or a cable that does not spread combustion. The concept of “non-combustible cable” is not enshrined in regulatory documents and is common. “Non-combustible” is permissible to be applied to the sheath or insulation material of the cable.

 

Also, the difference between fire-resistant and flame retardant cables is often overlooked, although it is significant.

Cables that do not propagate combustion (in the marking are designated as – ng) must fade out when the flame source disappears, both with group and single laying, that is, the cables do not remain operational as fire-resistant. Ng cables are characterized by the ability not to spread fire beyond the source of ignition to the limit established by GOST standards. As a result of the test, the cable is assigned a flame retardant category.

Non-flammable and fire-resistant, smokeless, power cables are cables with insulation consisting of four parts: cores, twists, insulation and sheath.

In this case, the core can be single-wire or multi-wire, made of copper or aluminum, has a sector or round shape. The insulation of the cores in such non-combustible or fire-resistant cables is made in a modern design – it is either PVC compound with additives or ceramics with a compound that allows the sheath not to sustain combustion or even to withstand fire for a long time, which are the simplest and most reliable types of insulation. These cables can be used to connect various panel board, industrial and lighting equipment.

Strands of non-combustible smokeless cables are PVC-insulated conductors of stranded wires, and they can be two-, three-, four- and five-core. Sheath for non-combustible cable, also made of PVC compound, with non-combustible additives. PVC compound with non-flammable additives, belongs to the category of non-combustion, self-extinguishing synthetic materials that withstand many external influences: frost, solar radiation, soil acidity, but are afraid of mechanical damage.

As for the fire-resistant cable itself, its vitality indicators are much higher, because it is specially designed to work in fire in emergency situations, when human life depends on the work of a fire-resistant cable.
Fire-resistant (or as it is also customary to call fire-resistant), halogen-free cables consist of special fire-resistant, structured, fire-retardant, ceramic-based polymer.
The inner flame retardant layer is a special compound tape made of halogen-free and flame retardant polymer. The insulation itself is a flame-retardant, halogen-free polymer-based compound.

 

In non-combustible and fire-resistant copper smokeless cables, the conductors are reliably protected from moisture penetration, from temperature extremes, and also insulate from the passage of electric current between the conductors in a twist, and, moreover, it is very reliable from all existing insulating materials.

Taking into account all the features of the above cables, when installing in places of increased fire hazard, for better protection, it is better to lay the cables in a metal hose.
